ADVANCING SUSTAINABILITY

The City of Fremont is dedicated to SUSTAINABILITY—the ability of the current generation to meet its needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs.

Sustainability uses a triple bottom line approach to advance social, economic, and ecological well being across the city while cultivating a mutually regenerative relationship with our planetary life support systems.

Fremont’s sustainability efforts work to address the overlapping issues of human-induced climate change and harmful environmental impacts on people, air, water, land, and wildlife by advancing resource conservation measures, eliminating harmful pollutants, adopting sustainable development practices, and enhancing the city’s vibrant natural ecosystems.

ADDRESSING CLIMATE CHANGE

In 2012, the City adopted its first Climate Action Plan, providing a roadmap for achieving our stringent community-wide greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction goal of 25% by 2020 from a 2005 baseline.

In February 2019, the Fremont City Council adopted a Carbon Neutrality Resolution, setting a 55% GHG emissions reduction target from 2005 levels by 2030 and a goal to achieve long term carbon neutrality by 2045.

On October 10, 2023, Fremont adopted an updated Climate Action Plan (CAP), Climate Ready Fremont, to align with its new 2045 carbon neutrality goal. For more information and to review the updated plan, visit the CAP webpage.

What is Fremont doing to address climate change?

When does the Environmental Sustainability Commission meet?

The Environmental Sustainability Commission meets quarterly from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Regular meetings are scheduled on the first Thursday of the month in March, June, September, and December.
